Mazda Coupe, Sedan, or Hatchback: What to Know

Mazda SedanEvery car shopper at our local Mazda dealership has their own opinions regarding price, powertrain, and features. Perhaps most important is body style and deciding whether to get a coupe, sedan, or hatchback.  Here are the differences between the three body types.

Sedan

Even though the last two decades have seen the SUV claim the title of ‘most popular body style’, over the long history of the automobile the sedan style is still the leader in terms of units sold.  In basic terms, a sedan is defined by its three separate segments, the engine block, passenger area, and trunk space. A sedan also features four doors, no matter what specific type of sedan you prefer. For example, you can buy a compact sedan like the Mazda3 or a midsize sedan such as the Mazda6.

Coupe

The easiest way to look at coupes is that they’re similar to sedans in terms of performance, features, and styling, but integrate two doors instead of four. Shop around for a coupe and you’ll find compact coupes, subcompact coupes, and even SUVs that incorporate a coupe-like design.  Some models come with a rear seat while others, such as the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF, are classic two-seat coupes that prioritize performance. For coupe seekers at Scott Mazda, design, handling, and appearance are the most important factors.

Hatchback

A hatchback is a compact car with four doors and a trunk-sized fifth door. Hatchbacks such as the Mazda3 hatchback are fun to drive, easy to mark and get excellent gas mileage.  They’re also comfortable, built to accommodate four passengers (and sometimes five) in comfort. This body style’s fifth door, beyond which lies ample cargo space, adds a level of utility not available with a sedan or a coupe.  Moreover, many hatchbacks offer configurable seating that slides and/or folds down for increased functionality.
